In and Around Chiang Rai
Located in Northern Thailand, the laid-back cultural center of Chiang Rai has become a popular destination for travelers to Thailand to escape the hustle and bustle of Bangkok and gain a greater appreciation of the Thai culture.
Morning Markets and Night Bazaar
Stroll the streets of Chiang Rai and lose yourself amidst the local market scene. The daily morning markets are held in central Chiang Rai, offering a wide variety of local foods, while the Night Bazaar sells everything from silk garments to handicrafts and local cuisine.
Bandaam Museum
Travel 10km north of Chiang Rai to explore the Bandaam Museum, commonly refered to as the Black House or Black Temple. The grounds of the museum include around 40 small black buildings which house the artwork and collections of the Thai artist, Thawan Duchanee.
Wat Rong Khun
Uncover the iconic Wat Rong Khun, aka the White Temple. Decorated with tiny pieces of mirror which glitter in the light, this temple is home to large mural paintings of the Lord Buddha and is used as ordination hall and museum exhibiting paintings of Chaloemchai Khositphiphat.
Trekking
Boasting mountainous terrain surrounded by stunning natural scenery, Northern Thailand is a popular destination for trekking enthusiasts of all levels. With both day trips and overnight trips on offer, you can take a gentle trail walk near the Kok River, or head towards the more challenging mountain slopes further north.
Further Afield
While volunteering in Thailand, many volunteers take the opportunity to venture further afield during their weekends and visit the capital of Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai.
Chiang Mai
Founded in 1296, Chiang Mai has an intriguing cultural heritage with over 300 temples and museums waiting to be explored. Many volunteers spend their weekends in Chiang Mai indulging in traditional Thai massage, cooking lessons, or simply exploring the ancient city.
