In the duration of the dental hygiene program, students will be engaged in a lot of different classes that will teach them the basics on the life of a dental hygienist. Many clinical procedures are performed by dental hygienists. Students will come to learn about the scope of their profession, knowing what they are allowed to do and not. Most often, dental hygienists handle preventive measures to help avoid oral problems, perform cleaning procedures to help maintain good oral health, and generally providing health education to patients of all ages. Their very focus is on the promotion of oral hygiene.
Students will also engage in laboratory classes, wherein they will tackle lessons on various lab duties, such as making temporary casts of the mouth and teeth and making crowns. They will also get trained on how to use dental instruments, equipment and machines that are frequently applied on duty. Some of these machines would be x-rays and the use of the dental chair. Students will be taught how to create radio-graphs and be able to read them. There are also many chemical agents that dental hygienists use in the practice, such as anesthetics and anti-microbial agents.
As an indispensable member of the dental healthcare team, dental hygienists may also act as office assistants. Classes that teach about office management and other related tasks are also provided by dental hygiene schools. These classes teach students how to schedule appointments, process insurance papers, keep medical records, and generally help create a therapeutic relationship with patients.

That is why interested applicants must first scrutinize the offered dental hygiene program in order to see if they have the dental hygiene classes that students may need. It will also define what kind of training they will be receiving and will in turn define what kind of dental hygienist they will become.
